Tuticorin

Tuticorin also known as Thoothukudi, is a city and a Municipal corporation in the Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu. The town, originally known as Thirumandhira Nagar was called ‘Tuticorin’ by the Portuguese people who came here. Today the city is referred to as Tuticorin in English and Thoothukudi in Tamil. Also known as Muthu Nagaram, the city of pearls due to its once thriving natural pearl diving industry, Tuticorin is one of India's fastest growing ports. After India won independence, the Port of Tuticorin witnessed a prosperous trade and handled a variety of cargo for neighbouring countries of Sri Lanka, Maldives and also for the coastal regions of India. A centre for maritime trade and pearl fishery for more than a century, the Tuticorin Port was declared as the 10th major seaport in 1974.

Kalakadu Wildlife Sanctuary
One of the most popular attractions in Tuticorin and a home to diverse species of wildlife, the Kalakadu Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over an area of over 222 sq km of Tirunelveli district. The diverse flora and fauna makes the sanctuary a popular attraction for nature lovers, botanists and ornithologists. Kalakadu Wildlife Sanctuary, included under ‘Project Tiger’, is the habitat of species like tigers, lion tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, sambar, sloth bear, elephant, flying squirrel, guar, panther, wild dog and pangolin. Kalakadu Wildlife Sanctuary is ideal for trekking and tourists can expect of some great fun amidst the gallery of varied species of animals and dense forests. But trekking requires prior permission from the forest department. September to March is the favourable time to visit this amazing wildlife sanctuary.
Tiruchendur Temple
Tiruchendur temple, known popularly as Thiruchendur Murugan Kovil, is a Tuticorin landmark. Situated in Thiruchendur, it is one of the Aaru Padai Veedu (6 houses) of Lord Muruga. Dedicated to Lord Subramanya or Lord Muruga, it presents a mystical aura with the sea at the backdrop and is no wonder a spectacular sight for tourists. This ancient temple, which dates back to the Vedic Period, is also noted for its architectural wonder. Tiruchendur temple is famous for auspicious occasions like Brahmothsavam, Vasanthothsavam, Visaka Visakam, Aavanipperunthirunaal, Skandha Sashti, Maasipperunthirunaal and Oonjal Sevai.
Tuticorin Port
Tuticorin Port is an artificial deep-sea harbour formed with rubble mound-type parallel breakwaters projecting into the sea and handles both containers and cruise ships. Located at around 20 kms east of Tuticorin old bus stand is the Tuticorin Port. Strategically built very close to chief international sea routes, Tuticorin Port handles a variety of both international and domestic cargoes. The very sight of the cargoes loading and unloading amidst the sea expanse as a silhouette is indeed worth a treat for the human eye.
Our Lady of Snows Basilica
Built in honour of Mother Mary, this 400 year old church built during 16th century is dedicated to St. Peter. Acknowledging its antiquity and reputation, Pope John Paul II raised this Church to the status of ‘Basilica’ in 1982 in memory of its 4th centenary celebrations. To show their affection and gratitude, devotees presented a Golden Car that is used to carry the miraculous statue of Our Lady of Snows around the town during Her feast day.
