Gurgaon, 4 July, 2016: SpiceJet, India’s favourite budget airline,
extends its supreme form to the cricket field by winning the 23rd TERI Cup, a corporate
cricket tournament organized by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). Last year’s
runner up at the same tournament, this victory also earmarks Team SpiceJet’s second
victory at a major corporate cricket tournament in the 2015-16 season.
The 25 over-a-side match between SpiceJet and TERI, held at the TERI Grounds in Gurgaon,
saw SpiceJet win the toss and put the defending champions, TERI into bat. The home team
got off to a flyer with scoring 56 runs without a fall of a wicket in the first 9
overs. However owing to the tactical genius of SpiceJet’s captain Kapil Mehta and some
brilliant bowling performance by the in-form bowlers saw the home team losing wickets
at crucial intervals, ultimately being bundled out for 113 runs in the 24th over.
Sandeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers with a magnificent spell of 3 wickets for 19
runs in 5 overs.
Chasing the score, SpiceJet’s openers showed remarkable prowess giving their team a
strong start with a run a ball score in the first 7 overs. Opener Vivek Srivastav’s
knock of 50 in 44 deliveries, stood out among the SpiceJet batting line up as he
smashed the ball all around the park. Mohd. Afnan and Gaurav Bisht, played a crucial
partnership at the end as they guided SpiceJet to victory by 8 wickets in the 20th
over.
Sandeep Yadav was adjudged the Man of the Match for his brilliant bowling performance
and SpiceJet’s Vice Captain Girish Kumar was awarded the Best Bowler of the Tournament
for his consistence bowling performance. Former ICC panel umpire Mr. SK Bansal, the
Chief Guest on the occasion, handed over the individual awards and praised the senior
leadership of the corporate for promoting the sport at the corporate level.
In the current 2015-16 season, SpiceJet has thus far played 5 corporate cricket
tournaments in Delhi - NCR, winning 2 titles while the grand finale of 2 is awaited.
