Jammu

Jammu, also known as Duggar, is one of the three administrative divisions within Jammu and Kashmir in India. The people of Jammu are called Dogras and their language is Dogri. The largest city and the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Jammu is also known as the "City of Temples". The city has numerous temples and shrines with glittering shikars soaring into the sky that dot the city’s skyline. Being the state’s economic centre, Jammu offers the luxury of modern living with huge shopping malls and commercial complexes. It is believed that Jammu was founded by Raja Jambu Lochan in the 14th century BC and was originally known as Jambu-Nagar. Once part of the Harappan civilization, Jammu is the region of the Middle Himalayas comprising several upland valleys with great natural beauty. Jammu's beautiful natural landscape has made it one of the most perfect venues for adventure tourism enthusiasts.

Shopping

Jammu offers a variety of shopping options for both the traditional and the modern tourist. The famous “Raghunath Bazaar” is very popular among both tourists & pilgrims as it is right in the heart of the city. Named after the famous Raghunath Temple, this market is just adjacent to the temple. Some popular restaurants in the neighbouring Residency Road provide food ranging from the simple to the exotic. Shops that sell handicrafts include the Kashmir Government Arts Emporium and Bahu plaza Shopping Complex, and handlooms are best found at Poshish. There are also a number of dry fruit outlets selling a wide range of dry fruits including Jammu’s speciality, the Rajma. This city of temples is also famous for its Choclate Burfi and Sund panjeeree; Amritsarian Di Hatti at Raghunath Bazaar and Pahalwan Di Hatti at Gole Market Gandhi Nagar stock them in plenty.

Shri Mata Vaishno Deviji
Nestling on top of the Trikuta Hills at a height of 1700 m is the sacred cave shrine of Vaishno Devi, the mother goddess. Popular the world over as ‘’Moonh Maangi Muradein Poori Karne Wali Mata’’ (the Mother who fulfills whatever Her children wish for), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Jiresides in a holy cave. At the culmination of their pilgrimage, pilgrims are blessed with the Darshans of the Mother Goddess inside this cave. The unwavering faith of the devotees who throng the Shrine from all parts of India and abroad is a sight to behold.
Shiv Khori Cave Shrine
Nearly a kilometre long, this holy cave houses a 4 ft high, naturally formed ‘Shivlinga’. Considered second only to the shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi in religious importance, this shrine has stalactites and stalagmites from where milky limestone water drips. One of the most venerated cave shrines of Lord Shiva in the region, the Holy cave is more than 150 mts long & houses 4 feet high Svayambhu Lingum.
Charar-e-Sharief
Dedicated to Sheikh Nooruddin, arguably the greatest mystic-saint of Kashmir, Chrar-e-Sharief is a shrine revered by both Muslims and Hindus. While personifying the Hindu-Muslim culture of the Valley, Nund was later named as Naruddin, literally meaning light of faith'. This is the only town in the valley which was to be developed as a Model Town, and thousands of people from all faiths visit the shrine.
Hari Parbat Fort
A Mughal fort situated on the banks of the Dal Lake of Srinagar, Hari Parbat Fort is positioned on top of the Sharika Hill. It was built during the reign of Akbar, but its present structure owes itself to the Afghan governor of Kashmir in the 18th century. It has a Parvathi temple on the western slope and the Muslim shrines of Khwaja Makhdoom Sahib and Akhund Mullah Shah on the southern side.
