Since the 16th Century, Amritsar has been the spiritual capital of the Sikh religion. An epitome of this devotion is the Harmandir Sahib or famously known as The Golden Temple. Located in the Northwestern State of Punjab, Amritsar is also the administrative headquarters of the Amritsar District.

  • Ram Tirath Fair
    ancient pilgrimage reminiscent of the times of the Ramayana, it is said that this is where Sita spent her period of exile n the cottage of Rishi Balmik. About a fortnight after Diwali, a fair is held here for 5 days which draws a huge crowd of Jatadhari (long-haired) Sadhus along with many pilgrims.
  • Basant Panchami at Chheharta Sahib
    Celebrated on the 5th day of the bright half of the month of Magh (end of January and beginning of February), Basant Panchami is held with much fervour at the Gurudwara Chheharta Sahib. Celebrations continue throughout the night till late in the afternoon of the next day. Kite-flying marks the Basant Panchami celebrations.
