Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad is the largest city in the state of Gujarat, with a population of approximately 52 lakhs (5.2 million). Located on the banks of the River Sabarmati, the city is the administrative centre of Ahmedabad district. The city established itself as the home of a booming textile industry, which earned it the nickname "the Manchester of the East." A rising centre of education, information technology and scientific industries, Ahmedabad remains the cultural and commercial heart of Gujarat and much of western India.

- Sabarmati Ashram
Founded in 1915, this ashram was Gandhi's headquarters during the long struggle for Indian independence. It still makes handicraft, handmade paper and spinning wheels. Gandhi's simple living quarters are preserved as a small museum and there is a pictorial record of the major events in his life. The ashram is open from 8.30 am to 6.30 pm. Admission is free. - Calico Textile Museum
This wonderful museum exhibits a magnificent collection of rare textiles. Besides, furniture, temple artifacts and crafts from different parts of the country can also be seen here. - Nal sarovar bird sanctuary
54 km away and connected the the city, the sanctuary offers a pleasant trip comprising of a lake and marshes where you can see flamingos, pelicans, cranes, storks, ibises, spoonbills, wading birds, kingfishers, swallows, osprey, harriers and falcons in huge numbers. - Theen Darwaza
Built by Ahmed Shah in 141 A.D., the Theen Darwaza is a grand gateway at Ahmedabad with three arched gates, and an example of magnificent Gujarati architecture. One of the oldest and longest gateways in Ahmedabad, it is located adjacent to Bhadra Fort.
- Kite Festivals
The International Kite Festival is always held at Ahmedabad in January, to coincide with the festival of Uttarayan or Makar Sankranti. People celebrate Uttarayan with a lot of gusto and fervour, and all business comes to a grinding halt for a couple of days. It is also a celebration to mark the end of winter. - Navratri
Navratri or the festival of nine nights is devoted to Goddess Shakti. The festival also has the famous folk dance of Gujarat "Garba". The festival continues for nine nights, and everyone takes part with renewed vigour. Garba is also played with 'Dandiyas' (sticks) in hand.
